John Chapter 9
- Review –
- Jesus claimed to be the light of the world
- people struggled with that (spiritual blindness)
- He chose to heal a physically blind man – man not only began to see physically, but spiritually as well
- Jesus claimed to be the light of the world
- vs 4 Night is coming
- Jesus is speaking of a period of time. We are still in the period of Light
- Audiences
- Audience 1
- They identify the man, being born blind (neighbors)
- Audience 2
- Deny the man, saying he is a look-a-like to the man born blind
- Blind Man himself
- Man who healed him was the man they call Jesus
- Parents
- confirmation of son and miracle
- didn’t want to confirm Jesus though (Fear of being thrown out of Temple/Social Standing)
- He is of age (vs 21-22)
- Remaining Crowd
- Only God could do this
- Sinner couldn’t possibly do this
- Audience 1
- Pharisees
- immediately brought blind man to trial
- Pharisees conclude Jesus is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath(vs 16) (He is a sinner)
- History – violates religious law not God’s law (Still with Moses) vs 28
- Gave credit for healing to God, denied Jesus
- Blind Man tracking through all of this (summoned 2 times)
- man vs 11
- From God
- Prophet vs 17 (high honor at this time for blind man. No prophet in 450 years/Malachi)
- Lord vs 38
- blind man ejected from Synagogue, Jesus was in pursuit (of his heart this time)
- tells man He is the Son of Man (favorite description Jesus uses)
- Son of = perfect
- Lights have been turned on. God was not satisfied otherwise
- blind man ejected from Synagogue, Jesus was in pursuit (of his heart this time)
- vs 39 – judgment
- Jesus came into the world for our judgment, not to judge us.
- Discernment, for us to wisely make a decision about God
- So that we may recognize that we have a need
- vs 40
- Pharisees offended at being called blind (spiritually)
- ownership
- recognize need = sight
- vision > self righteousness, steeped in sin > spiritual blindness
