As YHC noted in his tweet yesterday, Big Game and Big Workout to ensue. Either way, win or lose, nobody was going to sleep last night. The words held true, and for at least an hour YHC and some of the pax banded together for an unconventional “grueler”

Highlights from 3rdF at Search Office on Pembroke led by Bird’s Nest
Once we all got together, we started in John, Chapter 5. We briefly reviewed the miracle we saw in the first 8 verses, where Jesus heal an invalid of 38 years on the Sabbath.
After accusations/persecution of working on the Sabbath, Jesus makes it clear who He is, and why He is doing what He is doing. We see this in verse 17
- “My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working.”
- Claims God to be His father. Claims to be equals. Claims to be God (Verse 18)
- Verse 22 “Moreover”
- Jesus explains that the Father judges no one. Judgment is entrusted to the Son.
- Again – Co-equals
- Provides a glimpse of rewards
- Immediately sin is forgotten. In the movie of our life, those aspects are “blacked-out” = popcorn/bathroom break
- Judgment starts for a believer – at the good deeds they have done and how they will be rewarded in heaven for those deeds
- Eternal Life
- Verse 24 – “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes in Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. “
- Eternal life starts at Belief
- Jesus explains that the Father judges no one. Judgment is entrusted to the Son.
- Verse 25
- “when the dead hear…and those who hear will live”
- not talking about the raising of the physical dead
- speaking of the walking dead (not the tv show) the spiritually dead on earth
- upon hearing will enter into eternal life
- “when the dead hear…and those who hear will live”
- Verse 28
- “ALL”
- Jesus is coming for everybody
- “ALL”
- Testimonies
- Verses 31-47
- witnesses to the stand (Four)
- courtroom of the marketplace/surveying the crowd
- connecting dots – trusting and grasping
- 1st witness
- John the Baptist (vs 33)
- Likened to a Lamp
- People liked the lamp that he provided.
- Lead to where JTB pointed
- ME – Jesus
- Likened to a Lamp
- John the Baptist (vs 33)
- 2nd witness
- Miracles (vs 36)
- weightier testimony than JTB
- “have you not heard, have you not seen”
- Miracles (vs 36)
- 3rd witness
- The Father (vs 37)
- Jesus’ Baptism, the clouds opened and He spoke
- Scriptures via Prophets
- *** Bible study after resurrection***
- Road to Emmaus Jesus joins two disciples on the road (hidden identity)
- Luke 24:27 “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
- Step is required – Knowledge simply doesn’t get you there
- Heart Movement
- Vs 44
- Who’s your audience?
- Audience of man or audience of God
- Glory from man or glory from God
- Proverbs 29:25
- “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe”
- Who’s your audience?
- 4th witness
- Moses
- Hopes are set in Moses, he is their accuser
- He was given the Law which condemns them
- Jesus didn’t come to accuse, He came to SAVE
- If your hope is in Moses, your hope would be in Christ, because Moses wrote about Jesus
- Moses
- Verses 31-47
That concluded Chapter 5. We will see this format for the next few chapters. Miracle – debate/argument to follow.
Next week we will be in Chapter 6 where Jesus feeds the 5,000.
